Celebrating Morningside’s Literary Gems

In Morningside, a walk around the block is more than just exercise—it’s an opportunity to discover a new favorite story. Our neighborhood is home to several Little Free Libraries, those charming wooden boxes that operate on a simple, generous principle: "Take a book, share a book." Here are the libraries you’ll see on your next stroll through Morningside:

  • 1001 Chislett Street (Charter #22150): The first Little Library in Morningside is also the largest! In addition to a wide variety of books for adults and children, in the photo you can see current inventory also includes a puzzle and a bracelet.

  • 6937 Standish Street (Charter #30717): This library is dedicated to the memory of Jim Coyner, a late Captain of the Pittsburgh Firefighters. The "16" represents Jim’s original firehouse, a station that eventually moved and was renumbered in Squirrel Hill. It stands as a tribute to his years of service to the people of Pittsburgh.

  • 1449 Chislett Street (Charter #73298): This library is an example of sustainability, crafted entirely from upcycled materials. It is dedicated to the memory of the owners' late grandparents, Billy Jack and Boots Doleno, ensuring their love of the community continues to grow through the gift of reading.

  • 5433 Jackson Street (Charter #172070): Known as "Susan’s Bookstopper", this vibrant hub features books of all genres for readers of all ages. Susan’s library is a proud advocate for diversity, specifically welcoming LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and banned books to ensure every neighbor feels seen and represented on the shelves.

The Big Picture

These local libraries are part of a larger global movement. Little Free Library, a nonprofit based in St. Paul, Minnesota, functions as a catalyst for building community and inspiring readers. Their vision is simple but bold: a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader. If you see a book you like, take it! If you have a great read gathering dust on your shelf, consider dropping it off at one of these locations for a neighbor to enjoy.

Happy reading, Morningside!
