August Garden Spotlight

A local family (the Ninehousers) have had a plot in the Community Garden for the past three years. Here’s what they want you to know:

Q: How and why did you get a plot in the Community Garden?

A: We have a few vegetable beds in our backyard, but like everyone in Morningside, we don’t have a huge yard. I figured a plot in the community garden would give us a little space to try a few other vegetables. I applied to the city for a plot about ten years ago. I kind of forgot we had even signed up, but we were very excited to find out a plot had opened up for us.

Q: What do you have planted this year?

A: Zucchini, yellow squash, a couple varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, tomatillos, and rhubarb, raspberries.

Q: What is the most interesting or surprising thing you have planted?

A: Tomatillos! My husband wanted to plant them, but I wasn’t even sure they could grow here. They’ve done really well and we have the salsa to prove it.

Q: What’s been your biggest success?

A: Zucchini, zucchini, and more zucchini.  Would you like a zucchini?

Q: What’s been your biggest disaster?

A: We nurtured a watermelon from seed to full size. Unfortunately it was right by the fence, in full view of everyone, and right before we went to pick it, someone stole it. It broke our girls’ hearts.

Q: How much time do you spend tending to your plot?

A: Well we always wish we had more time to spend over there, but it’s not too bad. There’s a little extra work in the spring getting the beds ready, but then it’s pretty easy to maintain. A little bit of weeding and watering (depending on how helpful Mother Nature is being) is really all we have to do, other than picking our beautiful veggies.

Thank you to those that submitted some photos last month, the above photos make us smile! Who else has some plants to show off?!
