Pittsburgh Christmas Tree Recycling 2024-2025
Residents Can Recycle Christmas Trees at Several Locations
The City of Pittsburgh will open eleven drop-off locations for live Christmas trees from December 26, 2024, to January 26, 2025, as part of the Christmas Tree Recycling Program.
This program encourages residents to recycle their trees instead of sending them to a landfill by placing them at the curb. Trees collected will be chipped into pine mulch and made available to the public for free in Spring 2025. Residents must remove all ornaments, netting, tinsel, lights, and tree stands before dropping off their trees.
In 2023, the City collected over 2,300 trees across eleven drop-off sites. This year, the Department of Public Works’ Forestry Division, Streets Division, and Bureau of Environmental Services will collaborate to offer this recycling service again at the same eleven locations.
The City is also partnering with Girl Scout Troops 52498, 16388, 52482 and BSA Troops 9945 & 3945, who will provide curbside tree pick-up services in January. For a small donation, residents can place their trees outside, and the troops will collect and transport them to a city drop-off location. More information is available on the Environmental Services website.
In addition to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program, residents can also use the City’s year-round yard waste collection services.
As the year ends, the City’s Environmental Services Department mailed 126,000 copies of the annual recycling calendar and newsletter to residents who receive City waste and recycling services. The newsletter includes important updates, such as the addition of plastic tubs (like butter and yogurt containers) to the list of accepted materials, along with plastic bottles, jugs, and jars.
“We are excited to announced that we are now accepting plastic tubs such as butter and yogurt containers in addition to plastic bottle, jugs, and jars,” said Recycling Supervisor, Vanessa Reaves.
For more information on Christmas Tree Recycling or other recycling services, residents can call 311 or visit the program’s website.
