Local artist and Morningside resident Jack Sabbath has donated his creative talents to support Beth Claussen’s popular Summer Porch Concert Series, creating a colorful poster that captures the music, energy, and community spirit of the popular neighborhood events.
Jack, a 2D motion designer and illustrator, works as a freelance artist helping bring projects to life through animation, illustration, and motion design for brands, sporting events, advertising and social media. He and his wife, Lucy, moved back to her hometown of Pittsburgh three years ago and settled in Morningside two years ago with their two cats, Gracie and Betty.
“When Beth announced the schedule for the concert series I had the idea of making a music poster for the event,” Jack said. “I’m a big fan of music and art, and love how bands have music posters.”
He reached out to Beth with the idea, and with the support of MACC, the project came to life.
Jack wanted the artwork to capture the experience of a summer evening in Morningside: musicians performing on the porch, neighbors gathering to enjoy the show and the familiar homes and neighborhood surrounding the event. His color palette was inspired by Beth’s telephone pole mural featuring a colorful treble clef and the words, “Support Local Live Music.”
“When I saw the purple, blue, green and pink colors, I thought of the twilight of a summer’s night as the sun sets,” he said. “It was a fun project and felt like a great way to create a tangible memory of the porch concerts,” Jack said.
Music is also an important part of Jack’s creative process. “Music has a big influence on my work,” he said. “I love to listen and hear new music, and listening to it helps in the creative process to have something to work alongside.”
Like many creative professionals, Jack has soundtracks for focused work and playlists for getting into a creative zone. He’s also a fan of WYEP and its free summer concert series where he discovers new artists. When he’s not making art, Jack enjoys trying new recipes and playing video games.
Through his generous donation of time and talent, Jack has created more than just a poster. He has created a colorful keepsake celebrating the music, neighbors, and community spirit of a summer night in Morningside!
