Heth’s Field Scores Major League Makeover

Heths Field, before

Heths Field, after

If Heths Field looks a little fancy lately, that’s because it is. The Pittsburgh Pirates, at the encouragement of Mayor Corey O'Connor, partnered with Grove City-based DuraEdge Products to upgrade and laser-grade several community baseball and softball fields across the city—and Morningside was chosen as one of the locations!

DuraEdge is the industry gold standard for engineered infield surfaces. They formulate precise sand, silt, and clay mixtures designed to create the safest baseball surface possible. DuraEdge supplies professional infield dirt used at over 20 MLB stadiums across the country, including PNC Park.

Safer, Higher-Quality Fields for Youth Leagues

The primary goal of this joint project is to provide local youth leagues with safer, higher-quality playing environments. Over time, community fields naturally develop low spots, lips, and uneven terrain that can lead to bad bounces or twisted ankles. By utilizing advanced laser-grading techniques, the crews have perfectly leveled the playing surfaces to ensure smooth ball physics and vastly improved drainage during summer downpours. Players have already reported that the playing conditions are much better. It's an instant improvement in fielding for the Bulldogs!

Heths Field is one of four Pittsburgh fields diamonds receiving these resurfacing upgrades. The others are:

  • Herschel Field (Elliott)

  • Frick Park (including Frick No. 2)

  • Farmhouse Baseball Field (Highland Park)

A massive thank you to the Pittsburgh Pirates and DuraEdge Products for investing in Morningside’s young athletes!
